Why Cedar Suits Penarth

Penarth wasn't built cheap and it shows. The big villas on Plymouth Road, the Edwardian semis off Stanwell Road, the tall terraces above the Esplanade: solid houses with proper gardens behind them. A plastic clad box looks wrong behind a home like that. Cedar doesn't. It sits naturally against old brick and stone, and anthracite aluminium bifolds pick up the slate on half the rooflines in town.

Do I need planning permission for a garden room in Penarth?

Usually not. The Vale of Glamorgan Council is the planning authority here, and in Wales most single storey garden rooms count as permitted development, so no application is needed. The exception worth knowing about is Penarth's conservation area, which takes in the seafront and much of the Victorian centre, where the rules can be stricter. My Penarth terrace has no side access. Can you still build in the back garden?

It takes a bit more care on the carrying, but it doesn't change the price, the spec or the 2 to 4 week build time.

How does cedar cope with the sea air in Penarth?

Very well, which is one reason Gary builds in it. Cedar carries natural oils that resist rot and it's been used on coastal buildings for generations. This close to the Bristol Channel it weathers faster than inland: left untreated it silvers to an even grey, and a coat of oil once a year keeps the warm colour if you prefer it. The anthracite aluminium bifolds don't mind the salt either. Aluminium doesn't rust.
