A Proper Man Cave, Not a Shed with a Sofa in It

A proper man cave is your own pub at the bottom of the garden. A bar along one wall, a snug corner, the rugby on a big telly and nobody asking you to turn it down. Mine are soundproofed cedar garden rooms, so when Wales score at the Principality you can shout the house down and the house won't hear a thing.

Converting the spare room never works. You're still in the house, the sound travels, and the first guest who stays gets your bar. A garden room is separate. Cedar cladding, anthracite bifolds, 100mm insulation all round, so it's warm in January and usable every night of the year. Walk down the garden, shut the door, and it's yours.

What Goes into a Man Cave Build

Soundproofing comes first. Acoustic insulation in the walls and ceiling on top of the 100mm PIR that's in every build, so the sound system stays inside and the neighbours stay friendly. Then the bar. I can plumb in a sink and drainage properly, run a dedicated circuit for the beer fridge, and put dimmable lighting on separate circuits so it feels like a pub, not an office.

The telly wall gets braced inside the frame, so a big screen bolts straight to timber, not plasterboard hope. The frame itself is C24 at 400mm centres, same as a house. Electrics are Part P certified with the certificate handed over, and I hardwire Cat6 so the football streams without buffering just as the winger breaks clear.

Planning and Practicalities in Cardiff

Most man caves in Cardiff don't need planning permission. Garden rooms usually fall under Permitted Development, which means as long as the build stays within the height and coverage rules, Cardiff Council never needs to be involved. I check your garden against those rules at the free survey and tell you straight. If your plot's one of the rare ones that needs an application, you'll know before any money moves.

Access worries people in the terraces. Plenty of Cardiff gardens sit behind houses in Canton, Roath and Grangetown with a narrow back lane or nothing but the hallway to carry through. That's fine. A C24 timber frame goes up piece by piece, not craned over the roof, so if a man can carry it, it'll get to your garden. Forty years on the tools means tight access is just part of the job.

What a Man Cave Costs and How the Job Runs

Most builders won't put a price near their website. Here's mine. The 5m by 3.5m Signature build, which is the size most man caves want to be, starts at £23,750. That's the room, the cedar cladding, the anthracite bifolds, the insulation, the certified electrics and the 20 year EPDM roof. Smaller garden rooms start from £14,950. The survey's free and the quote is fixed and written down.

Will the neighbours hear the match?

Not if we soundproof it, and for a man cave I'd always recommend it. Acoustic insulation goes in the walls and ceiling on top of the standard 100mm PIR, which is already a decent sound barrier on its own. You can have the rugby up loud at midnight and the garden stays quiet. It's the difference between a room you use and a room you apologise for.

Can you fit a proper bar with a sink?

Yes. Bar plumbing is available on any build. That means a working sink with proper drainage behind the bar, not a bucket under the counter, plus sockets where the fridge and the glass washer want to be. It all goes through the same Part P certified electrics as the rest of the room. Tell me what you're after at the free survey and it's priced into the fixed written quote.

What does a man cave cost in Cardiff?

Garden rooms start at £14,950, but most man caves end up at the 5m by 3.5m Signature size, which starts at £23,750.
